Career Highlights:
Darnerien McCants developed into a productive and experienced receiver in his four seasons in Washington. He uses his size and athletic ability to make plays. In his four seasons with the Redskins, he has played in 30 games with three starts and collected 53 catches for 687 yards and eight scores. He broke out in 2003 for 27 catches for 360 yards and tied for a team-lead in touchdown catches with six. He served as the go-to threat in the red zone for the Redskins offense, providing a large target for the Redskins quarterbacks while all of his touchdown catches but one came from five yards out or less.
College/Personal:
- At Delaware State, McCants played his best season as a senior, at tight end, tallying career-highs of 36 catches, 692 receiving yards and 18 TDs. His TD total set Delaware State and MEAC records, and was No. 1 in Division I-AA.
- McCants was named to the All-MEAC First Team and the Sports Network, Walter Camp and Sheridan Broadcast Network Black College All-America teams.
- He set a school and MEAC single-game record with five TD catches against both Liberty (9/23/00) and North Carolina A&T (11/4/00). He tallied at least one TD catch in each of the last six games of his collegiate career.
- At Arundel High School in Gambrills, Md., he was an All-State, All-County and All-Metro selection in his only season of organized high school football. He led his teams to county and regional championships in football. McCants is also an accomplished artist, putting together works in just about every form, including painting, sculpture and photography.
- He cites his parents and former Redskins receiver Art Monk as his role models. McCants is one of the most active players on the Redskins roster in community service outreach. He works very closely with the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation and plans to establish his own foundation.
- In just two seasons, McCants is already earning off the field honors. He was the Redskins NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year and was named one of 2003's Washingtonians of the Year by Washingtonian Magazine and was also honored with the Kids Choice award at the JB Awards in conjunction with the NFLPA.
- McCants has participated the past two years in the Redskins All Stars program, encouraging and honoring area children and their commitment to community service. He has also been active in the Redskins Read program, reading to kids at libraries in the D.C. area.
- As part of the annual NFL Hometown Huddle event, McCants helped build a playground for children in Anacostia, D.C. in 2002.
- In fall 2002, McCants helped host a press conference to dedicate Cardozo High School's newly renovated football field as part of the Redskins Youth Development Program.
- As part of the Redskins Charitable Foundation's 4th & Life High School forum, Darnerien was part of a player panel that addressed over 800 senior high school athletes and coaches about hard work and pursuing their dreams on and off the field.
- During the holidays, he visited Children's Hospital to help make holiday ornaments and decorate the 'Redskins Room' while visiting with young patients.
- He graduated with a degree in art education.
